What is Nexplanon?
Nexplanon is a specific brand of implant birth control. This method of birth control offers 99% success for women, as there is no room for error. A special implant that uses hormones to fight against conception is injected into the arm. After approximately five days following implantation, the hormones in Nexplanon are released into the body and can protect women against pregnancy for approximately three years. While Nexplanon is highly effective at protecting from unwanted pregnancy, it does not protect against sexually transmitted disease, so the use of a barrier contraceptive, such as condoms, should be used if there are doubts regarding your partner’s sexual history.
Is implantation painful?
The doctor at Premier OB/GYN will administer a topic anesthetic on the skin at the injection site. While the area where the implant was placed may be bruised and tender after insertion, these side effects ease quickly within a few days.
What are the side effects of Nexplanon?
Outside of the immediate concerns such as bruising and discomfort, women should also be aware of the possible side effects of Nexplanon. These include:
- Irregular bleeding for six to 12 months after insertion
- Spotting between periods
- Longer, heavier periods
- Increased acne
- Changes in sex drive
- Changes in appetite
- Headaches, nausea, and dizziness
