What is Mirena?
Mirena is an intrauterine device (also referred to as an IUD) that uses hormones to prevent pregnancy. This small, T-shaped device is inserted into the uterus and slowly releases hormones over the course of several years. This makes the uterus inhospitable for fertilization to prevent conception.
How is the IUD inserted?
Our providers at Premier OB/GYN can insert the IUD during any normal office visit without a specialized appointment. Insertion is done in just a few minutes. Our patient is relaxed on the treatment chair with the feet in stirrups. A narrow plunger is inserted into the open cervix to place the IUD. In many situations, our team may recommend women have the IUD inserted during their period as it will often open easier during this time. After the IUD insertion, women can get back to their day without any interruption. Women should use backup birth control until their follow-up appointment to ensure the IUD is in place and functioning properly.
How long does Mirena last?
The Mirena IUD can last up to five years before it needs to be removed and replaced. If a woman decides she would like to conceive a child, the IUD can be removed earlier to allow for conception.
