What is Mirena?
Mirena is a specific brand of intrauterine device (IUD). It works through a T-shaped device that is inserted into the body and placed on the uterus. It remains in place and can protect women from conceiving for approximately two years. This is because the device released hormones regularly that make the uterus unsuitable for implantation of a fertilized egg. This protects a woman from pregnancy.
What are the benefits of the Mirena IUD?
Many women choose Mirena because:
- They do not have to remember taking anything on a day-to-day basis
- It lasts two years before it is removed and replaced, if desired
- It can be used by a breastfeeding mother
- It can reduce the heaviness of a woman’s menstrual flow
- It prevents pregnancy using hormone
What can I expect during the placement of my IUD?
At Premier OB/GYN, we want to make sure our patients are comfortable during the insertion of their IUD. Many women have the IUD placed without any type of sedation and experience mild discomfort. Some cramping may persist for a few days after placement, but will typically go away on its own. Our team of professionals gently place the IUD during a simple office visit, and women can return to their normal activities for the remainder of the day.
