Why a woman might consider a hysterectomy

istock 1029344582 2 Having a hysterectomy is a personal and private decision for a woman. It can also be a difficult choice. This surgical procedure is performed to remove the uterus, which can eliminate a woman’s chance of becoming pregnant in the future. At Premier OB/GYN, we understand that women in the areas of Bradenton, FL may be struggling with this choice. Our doctors believe in providing the information women need to make a knowledgeable decision regarding their reproductive health.

Why might a woman desire a hysterectomy?

There are several reasons why a woman might have this procedure performed. Below are just a few of the situations that can arise and result in the desire or need to remove the uterus:

  • Uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids are growths that are benign (non-cancerous) but develop in the uterus. They can cause women to have bleeding and pain. Some women may benefit from a less invasive procedure called a myomectomy to treat these fibroids, which is a procedure that only removes the fibroids and allows the uterus to remain. This is often done as a first step prior to full uterus removal.
  • Cancer. According to research, approximately 10% of hysterectomies are performed due to cancer. Cancers that might be addressed with a hysterectomy include cancers of the ovary, uterus, endometrium, or the cervix.
  • Endometriosis. Conditions such as endometriosis, which causes endometrial tissue to develop outside of the uterus, can cause extreme pain, irregular periods, and other problems that might be resolved with a hysterectomy.
  • Infection. Patients who have PID, or “pelvic inflammatory disease,” may benefit from removing the uterus if this bacterial infection cannot be controlled with antibiotics or spreads.
