Why might a woman desire a hysterectomy?
There are several reasons why a woman might have this procedure performed. Below are just a few of the situations that can arise and result in the desire or need to remove the uterus:
- Uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids are growths that are benign (non-cancerous) but develop in the uterus. They can cause women to have bleeding and pain. Some women may benefit from a less invasive procedure called a myomectomy to treat these fibroids, which is a procedure that only removes the fibroids and allows the uterus to remain. This is often done as a first step prior to full uterus removal.
- Cancer. According to research, approximately 10% of hysterectomies are performed due to cancer. Cancers that might be addressed with a hysterectomy include cancers of the ovary, uterus, endometrium, or the cervix.
- Endometriosis. Conditions such as endometriosis, which causes endometrial tissue to develop outside of the uterus, can cause extreme pain, irregular periods, and other problems that might be resolved with a hysterectomy.
- Infection. Patients who have PID, or “pelvic inflammatory disease,” may benefit from removing the uterus if this bacterial infection cannot be controlled with antibiotics or spreads.
