What is a colposcopy?
A colposcopy is a diagnostic tool used to look for issues within the cervix. A special imaging device called a colposcope is inserted into the vagina and used to examine the cervix. During this time, the doctor will be looking for signs of cancer or other problems within the cervix. Many of the issues that can be spotted during a colposcopy include:
- Swelling/inflammation of the cervix
- Warts
- Polyps or uterine fibroids
- White patches
- Potentially cancerous tissues
If the doctor evaluates a patient with an abnormal pap smear and does not spot any problems within the cervix, additional testing may be done to determine the cause of the unusual results.
How to prepare for a colposcopy?
Women who are told they could benefit from a colposcopy may be unsure as to what to expect and how to prepare. The doctor will advise women to abstain from sexual intercourse for two days before their procedure, and to avoid the use of products inserted int eh vagina, including tampons. Colposcopies are also better performed when they are scheduled outside of a woman’s period which can make examination difficult or provide incorrect results. Women should expect mild discomfort, but this is often well-tolerated and resolves on its own after the procedure is completed.
