Understanding the hysteroscopy procedure
Hysteroscopy is a diagnostic procedure used to examine the inside of the uterus. A thin, lighted telescope (hysteroscope) is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. The device allows your doctor to view the inside of the uterus on a video screen, making it easier to evaluate the uterus and cervix. A hysteroscopy is used to diagnose and treat problems in the uterus.
Hysteroscopy is often done in conjunction with another diagnostic procedure called laparoscopy. Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure in which a small telescope is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen. This allows your doctor to view the outside of the uterus and ovaries.
Do I need to go to a hospital for a hysteroscopy?
Hysteroscopy is usually done as an outpatient procedure, which means the procedure is performed right in our office, and you can go home the same day. The process takes about 30 minutes to an hour.
Is the hysteroscopy painful?
You will receive a sedative to help you relax during the procedure. Local anesthesia is not necessary. General anesthesia is rarely used for hysteroscopy.
What can I expect after a hysteroscopy?
After the procedure, you may have some cramping and vaginal bleeding. These symptoms should go away within a few days. You may also have some spotting for a few days after the procedure.
