How does Mirena® work?
The Mirena® IUD works by thickening the cervical mucus to make it difficult for sperm to reach the woman’s egg. It also thins the natural lining of the uterus, making it less likely for a fertilized egg to implant.
Is Mirena® a safe option for me?
The Mirena® IUD is both a safe and effective option for birth control, but there are a few possible side effects that you should be aware of. These include:
- spotting or bleeding between periods
- heavier or longer menstrual bleeding
- cramps
- backache
- headaches
- breast tenderness
If you experience any of the side effects above, they should go away after a few months. However, if they persist or become more severe, you need to talk to your doctor at Premier OB/GYN. There is also a slight risk of the IUD expulsion (coming out on its own), which can occur more frequently in women who have had children. If this happens, you will need to use another form of birth control until the IUD can be replaced.
Am I a candidate for Mirena®?
The best candidates for the Mirena® IUD are women who are looking for a long-term, reversible form of birth control. Women who want the choice to get pregnant later can have the IUD removed to reverse its effect and allow them to conceive a child–on their own terms!
